Ask Marcia Leadership Q and A's: Leaders Discuss: Top 2022 Challenges!
/Thank you for submitting your leadership questions to md@mdaszko.com.
A. Business leaders need to continually be in learning mode, scanning the environment for triggers of change that will impact their business, employees, and customers. Various industries are impacted differently. For example, hospitality, travel, and education have been severely hit. Yet amazon, Zoom, and online learning companies like Udemy and Coursera catapulted into major growth modes. Many had to pivot their business models, products, or services.
The challenges facing executives over 2022 include: recruiting, hiring, training, and retaining talented workers; cybersecurity threats; creating a sustainable culture that is mentally healthy; continual improvement and innovation for their growth and economic success; and awareness of outside forces (regulation; new laws; global threats; innovation and competition, and industry trends), and succession planning (many businesses say it’s important, and few create a viable plan.) These are some of the general challenges that the leaders need to address. Have you discussed them? What is your plan now to deal with them? These are not topics to mull over for six months. If you need to meet for days, it will be quality time well spend and may mean the survival or demise of your company if not addressed.
Management’s job is prediction. Anticipate the issues through strategic conversations and identify trends before there are surprises that can be devastating. If there is a shocking problem the managers need to address, focus on the issue (not wasting time and energy blaming anyone—inside or outside of the company.) Together the team needs to create its Action Plan and implement it. Make mistakes rapidly (they happen as you work a new plan), learn and adjust. Adapt and move forward.
